Why Standard Lead-Acid Chargers Damage Lithium Batteries

It is a common misconception that "any 12V battery charger will work." While a lead-acid or AGM charger might get energy into a lithium battery in an emergency, using one regularly will permanently degrade the cells and cut your battery's lifespan in half.

Here is why standard chargers are incompatible with LiFePO4 chemistry:

Title

Incompatible Charge Profiles (CCCV)

Lithium batteries require a precise Constant Current / Constant Voltage (CCCV) charging profile. They absorb high current quickly up to a precise voltage limit (typically 14.4V to 14.6V for a 12V battery) and then hold that voltage while the current drops. Lead-acid chargers use slow, varying voltage stages that fail to fully charge lithium.

The Danger of Desulfation (Equalization Mode)

Many smart lead-acid chargers feature an automatic "desulfation" or "equalization" mode. This stage sends high-voltage pulses (sometimes over 15.5V) into the battery to break up lead-sulfate crystals. These high-voltage pulses can instantly destroy a lithium battery's cells or force the internal Battery Management System (BMS) into a hard shutdown.

Incorrect "Float" Voltages

Lead-acid batteries self-discharge rapidly, so standard chargers use a "float charge" (typically 13.5V to 13.8V) to constantly trickle power into them. Lithium batteries have an incredibly low self-discharge rate and do not tolerate continuous float charging, which can stress the cells over time.

Crucial Maintenance Tips for LiFePO4 Longevity

To get the absolute most out of your 12V lithium setup on the water or at the campsite, follow these professional maintenance guidelines:

Charge Your Battery on Day One

When you first unbox your Lithium Pros battery, fully charge it until the charger indicates a complete cycle. Then, run your equipment normally until the battery is nearly depleted before charging it again. Your BMS will already be calibrated, however establishing a fresh charge cycle will allow the BMS to accurately calculate your state of charge percentage on the LP Battery View app.

Title

Mind the Cold-Weather Lockout

While LiFePO4 batteries perform incredibly well down to freezing temperatures, you must be cautious of charging a lithium battery if the internal cell temperature drops below 32°F (0°C). Doing so causes "lithium plating" which permanently ruins the cells. Fortunately, Lithium Pros batteries feature an integrated BMS that automatically locks out incoming charge current if the battery is freezing. If you camp or boat in the winter, let the battery warm up in a heated space before plugging in the charger. Keep in mind, this is internal battery temperature. It’s very common for the external outside temperature to be 40°F but battery temperature internally be higher. If you have an M-Series or N-Series battery with internal individual cell heating, you can turn this on via the LP Battery View app to warm the battery for use.

Title

Proper Long-Term Storage

If you are winterizing your boat, camper, or trailer, do not store your lithium batteries fully flat or fully charged.

The Sweet Spot: Charge your battery to 60% to 80% capacity before storage.

Disconnect Parasitic Draws: Disconnect the main negative cable or flip your main breaker. Even small idle draws (like stereo memory, clocks, or trailer sensors) can completely drain a battery over three months.

Turn Off the BMS: If your battery features an isolation switch, use it to shut down the BMS entirely for long-term storage. You can manually turn off the battery by going into the LP Battery View app, clicking on your battery, going to settings, and clicking “Turn Off Battery.” You’ll be able to turn the battery back on via magnet activation on the top of the battery.

Frequently asked

Title
Will any 12V battery charger work on lithium?

It is a common misconception that "any 12V battery charger will work." While a lead-acid or AGM charger might get energy into a lithium battery in an emergency, using one regularly will permanently degrade the cells and cut your battery's lifespan in half.

What voltage does a 12V lithium battery charge to?

Lithium batteries require a precise Constant Current / Constant Voltage (CCCV) charging profile. They absorb high current quickly up to a precise voltage limit (typically 14.4V to 14.6V for a 12V battery) and then hold that voltage while the current drops.

Why is desulfation mode dangerous for lithium?

This stage sends high-voltage pulses (sometimes over 15.5V) into the battery to break up lead-sulfate crystals. These high-voltage pulses can instantly destroy a lithium battery's cells or force the internal Battery Management System (BMS) into a hard shutdown.

Should I float charge a lithium battery?

Lithium batteries have an incredibly low self-discharge rate and do not tolerate continuous float charging, which can stress the cells over time.

Can the IntelliCharger overcharge my battery?

Once your battery reaches its peak voltage and the current acceptance drops below 900mA, the charger automatically stops and displays "End" on the built-in LCD screen. There is no risk of overcharging.

Can I charge my battery below freezing?

You must be cautious of charging a lithium battery if the internal cell temperature drops below 32°F (0°C). Doing so causes "lithium plating" which permanently ruins the cells. Fortunately, Lithium Pros batteries feature an integrated BMS that automatically locks out incoming charge current if the battery is freezing.

How should I store my battery over winter?

If you are winterizing your boat, camper, or trailer, do not store your lithium batteries fully flat or fully charged. Charge your battery to 60% to 80% capacity before storage.
